Job Title:  Sanitarian                                    Department:  Health        

Job Overview:  Monitor, address and correct potential public health hazards.  Perform professional and technical work, sometimes under stressful conditions, requiring adherence to accuracy, confidentiality, integrity, and tact.  Position is on-call for emergencies.  Frequent contact with public, coordination with other departments, and enforcement of applicable laws and regulations is required.

NOTE:  This is currently a part-time position.  Has the potential to transition to full-time, dependent upon contract funding. 

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities):

Review, evaluate and approve services

Conduct technical and specialized health inspections and investigations

Evaluate programs and provide recommendations

Develop administrative policies and recommendations

Interpret new and existing local, state and federal law

Attend staff meetings and training

Supply technical and professional consultation

Represent county during inter- and intra-agency projects

Prepare and submit numerous reports to different inter- and intra-agencies

Review subdivision proposals

Conduct public educational meetings

Investigate emergencies

Respond to complaints

Physical and Environmental Demands: Work in and around hazardous and life-threatening situations requiring proper safety precautions, procedures and training. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of chemistry, bacteriology, biology and environmental health.  Extensive knowledge of hazardous waste operations and emergency response procedures.  Understand and follow complex laws, communicate effectively, oral and in writing, follow verbal direction, establish effective working relationships with other employees, departments, agencies and the public.  Ability to deal with public effectively, problem solve, work unsupervised and safely, detect and resolve unsanitary and dangerous conditions, and minimize risk.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):  BS degree in chemical, biological science, environmental health or comparable field.  A valid state of Montana driver’s license.  Within the 1st year of employment:  Successfully complete National Registered Sanitarian Exam.  Become licensed as a Sanitarian in the state of Montana.

Preferred Qualifications:  2 or more years as a Sanitarian
